Controller and contact

Merito Media LLC operates FaunaGuide and controls these processing activities. Its address and contact email appear above. Write there with the subject “Privacy” for data enquiries. Do not send passwords or identity documents unless strictly necessary to verify a request.

Newsletter data and purpose

We collect email, language, edition and, where the edition requires it, country or region. We record request, confirmation and unsubscribe dates, the consent version, technical identifiers and delivery results. A pseudonymised IP hash may be recorded on requests and confirmations to evidence consent and limit abuse. Consent is the basis for sending a confirmation and, only after you confirm the email link, the newsletters you selected. We do not use email opening pixels or sell the subscriber list.

Confirmation, preferences and unsubscribing

Email is necessary to receive newsletters, not to browse. A pending request is not an active subscription. The confirmation link expires after 48 hours; this does not automatically delete the request. Language and edition determine deliveries. Emails other than subscription confirmation requests contain an unsubscribe link to a confirmation page. Confirming stops email according to the scope shown on that page. Subscribing again requires a new confirmation.

Enquiries and editorial corrections

The contact form collects name, email and message with your permission to answer your enquiry. Corrections record message, correction type, language and evidence URL, with optional name and email for replies. Our legitimate interest in accuracy and documenting editorial review supports handling corrections; you may object under applicable law. Neither form subscribes you to newsletters. Avoid sensitive data and unnecessary information about other people.

Browser notifications

With your consent and browser permission, Web Push stores the encrypted endpoint and subscription keys, editions, consent events and delivery results. Email is not required. Disable notifications on the preferences page or revoke browser permission. Disabling all notifications removes the endpoint and keys from our record; technical results and consent history may remain. We do not use this service to track your reading.

Browsing, security and cookies

Requests send technical data such as IP, time, browser and requested resource to the server and to external providers when their resources load. Sessions, form protection and rate limits support operation and prevent abuse, based on our legitimate security interest. Theme and saved reading preferences stay in your browser. The cookie policy explains storage and optional analytics. If Google Analytics is configured, it requires prior acceptance and can be disabled through its controls. Rejecting analytics does not prevent reading.

Recipients and external services

Authorised staff and providers of hosting, technical maintenance, email and notification services may access data necessary for their functions. Push depends on the browser provider. Google Fonts and external media providers receive technical data when their resources are requested; Google Analytics loads only when configured and accepted. Data may be disclosed to authorities when legally required. Following external or social links takes you to services with their own policies.

International processing

Merito Media LLC is established in the United States. Service location may entail processing or access outside your country and the European Economic Area. Contact us for the recipients, countries and safeguards applicable to your case. Transfers subject to the GDPR require a valid mechanism, such as an applicable adequacy decision or contractual safeguards and supplementary measures where needed. Newsletter consent is not general permission for transfers without safeguards. A provider’s US location does not establish certification.

Retention

Subscriptions remain while active. After unsubscribing, records needed to respect the opt-out, prevent duplicates and evidence consent and deliveries may remain; unsubscribing does not erase all history. Pending requests and errors remain while needed for management or accountability. Enquiries and corrections remain through handling and afterwards where needed for editorial history, liabilities or applicable legal periods. Backups may retain data through their renewal cycle. You may request erasure; retention duties will be assessed and necessary retained data restricted.

Rights and requests

Where applicable, you may request access, rectification, erasure, restriction, objection and portability. Withdrawal of consent does not affect earlier lawful processing. Write to the email or postal address above with your subscription address and request. We only request proportionate additional identification if needed. GDPR requests are generally answered within one month, subject to justified extensions permitted by law. You may complain to the competent data protection authority, including Spain’s AEPD at aepd.es.

Minors and automated decisions

Our educational content is for a general audience; we do not request profiles of minors or sensitive data. Where you lack legal capacity to consent, a legal representative must manage the subscription. We may verify or remove subscriptions that do not meet those conditions. Anti-spam filters and language or edition selection are technical functions, not decisions producing legal or similarly significant effects about you.

Changes and questions

The date identifies this version. We update information when purposes or services change and request new consent when needed. Updating the policy does not activate pending requests or reverse opt-outs. See also the legal notice and cookie policy, or contact the editors about a particular processing activity.
